The Bishop's Message

Green is for growth

I always look forward to summer.  In my former parish I used to tell the secretary, “Wait till the summer, when things will quiet down!” One day she looked up to me and said, “You realize they never do, you know!” Well, she was right and she was wrong.  Summer is not Christmas or Easter, it is a steady time of ministry where I visited, had lunch with people, drank beer, and yes, sometimes I took them out on a spin in my vintage convertible.  It isn’t a time with no activity, but it is different activities.  Besides, I needed to illusion to keep going.

So I am all for a reasonable break!  No advisory boards, some combined services, people take holidays, and they are more relaxed.  I totally support that and wish you all have a time of refreshment.  On the other hand, the church should not come to a full stop, but should explore the unique opportunities that summer brings.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Summer is for dreaming for the long term.
  • A time to look at the readings for the next year and plan preaching and study series, particularly if you are clergy.
  • Make use of those Old Testament readings on Sunday – it is the Joseph story and Exodus this year.
  • Catch up on some reading, both spiritual and otherwise.
  • Make connections and reconnections.
  • Special events for those out of school.
  • Camping trips with youth.
  • Parish days away?
  • Be ready for visitors, what is the impression you will give?
  • Spruce up your property, how about that garden?
  • Of course, take that holiday you need.

In other words, summer is a season for steady growth in all respects.

It will be a most memorable summer for Kathy and I as we are to spend three weeks at the Lambeth Conference.  I look forward to a time of spiritual refreshment and a great opportunity to talk about God’s ministry with colleagues from all over the world and thus experience the Anglican Communion in a very real way.  I predict there will be reports of disasters in the press and I think some of those stories are already written and are just waiting for the occasion to be released.  Pray for us and I look forward to sharing some of my stories with you when I come back to the office on August 5.

God bless.

Your friend and bishop

Patrick
