He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Toronto School of Theology, thesis title, "Being Christian in a multi-faith context". Catherine Sider Hamilton (ed.), Toronto: ABC, 2003. "A parish response to cultural diversity." in Canadian Anglicanism At the Dawn of a New Century, M. Darrol Bryant,(ed.) Will you see a doctor, or a personal trainer?

This picture was taken in 2006.  I have grown larger since that time, and it is time to reverse the trend.

I know what to do.  If I go see my doctor for a physical, he will want me to eat healthy.  He will have indicators on weight, cholesterol, blood sugar and a host of other things, first as an assessment, then targets for me to reach – ouch!  Or I can go to a gym and have someone prescribe the kind of exercises to reduce my waistline.  Either one will help; if I am ambitious and truly want to lose weight, I can do both.

I am speaking metaphorically, of course.  If you think your church has grown somewhat complacent, or idle, or weighed down.  We have the equivalent of a diagnostic tool and personal trainers.  It is a joy to be in a Diocese which can offer these opportunities.  Natural Church Development (NCD) offers a diagnostic tool as to how healthy your church is.  Its 8 indicators will tell you how likely you are to grow and, more importantly, what to work on next.  Many parishes in the Diocese have embarked upon it and those churches that followed through will tell you that the program works.

A newer regiment concerns the missional church.  Many things are happening over a wide front, including the Vital Church Planting conference, visioning days, and now, a six week “Mission Shaped Introduction” for parish teams, just to get a taste of what that buzzword is all about.  We are fortunate to have two courses running in the area.  Please contact Carol or Jenny if you are interested.

Both are roads to health, both are effective.  Some of you may have to choose, some are already well on your way to one and want to try out another.  It seems clear that churches in the Diocese of Toronto are on the move, moving to health, moving out in the love of Christ to be His witness.  My prayer for you is that you will take steps on the road together, and pray for me that I will actually do something, and not simply procrastinate.

Blessings for a great summer!

Your friend and bishop

Patrick
